New Walmart Neighborhood Market Opening in Downey

Grocery store to open before end of the year in site of former party supply store

Walmart today announced that construction of a nearly 33,000 square-foot Walmart Neighborhood Market is underway at 12270 Paramount Blvd. in Downey. The store, which is expected to open later this year and will replace a former party supply shop, is expected to help boost economic revitalization efforts in this part of the city.

“We are proud and excited to welcome the Walmart Neighborhood Market to our City,” said Councilmember Mario A. Guerra. “This store will bring new jobs and revenues to our community. I’m pleased to see Walmart is breathing new life into this empty building.”

Later this summer, Walmart will open a hiring center at the YMCA in Downey to fill approximately 65 full-time and part-time positions.

The hiring process will be led by store manager Jamie Onibasa, who began her career as a cashier at a Sam’s Club in Ogden, Utah more than 15 years ago. Most recently, she worked at the Walmart store in Long Beach Towne Center.

“We’re excited to bring a Neighborhood Market to Downey. The Neighborhood Market is small, community store that will give residents a choice when it comes to affordable, fresh and healthy food options for their families,” said Onibasa. “I look forward to opening a hiring center near the store soon to make these new jobs convenient to the community.”

As of April 30, 2012, the average wage for regular, full-time hourly associates in California is $12.79 per hour. Walmart’s benefit program is available to eligible full- and part-time associates and provides a variety of affordable health and well-being benefits including health care coverage with no lifetime maximum.

Walmart also offers eligible associates matching 401(k) contributions of up to 6 percent of pay, discounts on general merchandise, an Associate Stock Purchase Program, and company-paid life insurance. Additionally, eligible associates receive a quarterly incentive bonus based on store performance.

The Walmart Neighborhood Market format was first introduced in 1998 and is designed to provide quick and convenient one-stop shopping for groceries, pharmacy items and general merchandise. This company operates about 200 stores like this across the country and plans to open 80 more this fiscal year.

California’s first Walmart Neighborhood Market opened last month in Huntington Beach.

Downey Neighborhood Market will be located at 12270 Paramount Blvd. in Downey and open late fall 2012.

The Walmart Hiring Center is located at the Downey YMCA, 11531 Downey Ave., Downey, CA. The hiring center will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday. Applicants should apply online first at http://careers.walmart.com. For job seekers who wish to complete an application on-site, there are also a limited number of computer kiosks at the hiring center.

Full- and part-time employees are needed to work in all areas of the new store, including supervisory positions. Most staff will begin work in September to help prepare the grand opening.

The hiring center phone number is 562-861-5401.
